Experience the Missouri River and its river valley as did the earliest of people living along its banks at Cross Ranch State Park.  The park is located along seven miles of the last free-flowing, undeveloped stretches of the river and is rich in both cultural and natural history.

North Dakota's Centennial State Park is purposely left primitive to preserve the land's natural beauty.  The River Peoples Visitor Center has displays and information about the once mighty Missouri River, which is now tamed through a series of major dams and reservoirs along its impressive length.  A boat ramp and electrical camping sites can be found at the Sanger Campground.  The park's main campground offers RV sites without electrical hookups, spectacular log cabins, yurts and a primitive tent area.

Cross Ranch State Park offers visitors adventure year round.  It has an extensive trail system for hikers where they can glimpse the creatures which inhabit the thickly forested river bottom.  The park is a winter playground for those who like to play in the snow.  Equipment rentals include canoes, kayaks, snowshoes and cross country skis.

35 Primitive RV sites, 15 electrical, 15 tent sites, group camping sites.  Campsite, yurt and cabin reservations can be made online at www.parkrec.nd.gov or by calling 800-807-4723.

Fort Stevenson State Park is among the most popular destinations in the North Dakota State Park system.  It is one of three state parks on Lake Sakakawea and is a favorite among outdoor recreation enthusiasts wanting to experience on of the nation's greatest fisheries.  The park gets its name from a 19th century frontier military fort, which is now under water.  It is located on Lake Sakakawea's north shore and receives great support from the nearby community of Garrison.

The park features two marinas - de Trobriand on the park's east side and Garrison Bay on the west.  The Garrison Bay marina is one of the few deep water marina's on Lake Sakakawea catering to the fluctuating levels of the large man-made lake providing access no matter how high or low the water.  FSSP offers reasonable slip rentals and also rents fish boats, paddle boats and a pontoon.  Nature lovers will marvel at the park's flora and fauna, and won't want to miss the arboretum containing over 50 plant species.

Several marjor crowd pleasing eents are held at the park each year including a kite flying festival, Governor's Cup Fishing Derby, Frontier Days and Beach Party.  FSSP is open year-round with full service camping available from mid-May to the end of September.

Campground: 138 modern sites, 30 also have sewer; 2 two faily cabins with bath, efficiency kitchen, air conditioning and heat; 3 camping cabins; and 15 primitive tent sites.  Campsite and cabin reservations can be made online at www.parkrec.nd.gov or by calling 800-807-4723.

Located on the south shore of one of the three largest man-made reservoirs in the nation, Lake Sakakawea State Park offers a wide range of water based recreational activities and facilities.  The park has a full service marina and two boat ramps providing access to the big lake, no matter the water level.

The western-most segment of the 3,200 mile North Country National Scenic Trail intersects the Lewis & Clark Trail at the park.  The park has three miles of hiking trails and along with hiking there are mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities.

A short distance from the park, about a mile, is the Garrison Dam where visitors can visit the power generation facility and the North Dakota Game and Fish fisheries operation.  The North Country Trail provides an excellent vantage point for viewing Garrison Dam and Scoria Bay.  The scoria, found along the Missouri River and farther west in the North Dakota Badlands, was created when seams of coal caught fire and baked the surrounding sand and clay into hard, red natural brick.

149 modern camp sites, 41 primitive sites, 10 group camping sites, and two camping cabins are available to the public.  Campsite and cabin reservations can be made online at www.parkrec.nd.gov or by calling 800-807-4723.

These villages are where Lewis & Clark obtained the services of Sakakawea and her husband, Charbonneau. Visible remains of earthlodge dwellings, cache pits, fortification ditches and travois trails are in an extraordinarily fine state of preservation. A visitor center with museum exhibits, a short film and a furnished earthlodge provide interpretation on the site, and you can enjoy 14 miles of self-guided history and nature trails.
